2021 - Here we are

So, it's 2021.  We made it through 2020 which is something not everyone managed to do.

I've got a few reviews from 2020 left to go and seeing as we are probably going to be locked down again, I'll have more reviews.  I have recently bought a fair amount of books to get me through this year and I am properly not buying anything unless it's on my proper wishlist.

I was going to carry on my book reviews for my own mind because I wanted to record what I thought about books but it's January 2021 and we've got yet another presser from the "PM" this morning.  Now we're apparently going from Tier 4 to 5...T4 is pretty much lockdown anyway so I've got no idea what T5 is and I bet the shitshow in charge doesn't have an idea either.  I guarantee borders won't close.

I don't make resolutions but what I really need to do is stop buying every book I have a passing fancy to and actually read what I've got...but what can you do when there are so many books out there I want to read??

ANYWAY, I have become very good at selling my old books recently.  I keep the ones I like and will read again for the most part but others I know I won't read again, I sell or swap.

I've never abided by lists before and I think that's why I'm suffering so I am going to do away with lists.  However, I never needed a list before because I was always in bookshops looking at books.  This is so rambly...

Lockdown is dun out ere

July 9 2020 So, the lockdown is pretty much over.  The only things that remain closed are offices (we work from home), the theatres and cinemas.   *update* As of July 24th, you can't go shopping without a mask. It is already compulsory to wear them on the tube but now you have to wear them everywhere apart from when you go out to eat or drink..which I think is really stupid but we need to get back to some kind of normality. Last book of 2021 - The Maidens by Alex Michaelides

Reading date - December 2021 You know sometimes you see a book mentioned everywhere and then the author releases the follow-up book and you hear that mentioned everywhere, too?  That is how I came across this book. It had been hyped up to death and I thought I should give it a try.  I will never, ever learn.  I know that these books that are hyped up always fall short for me but still, I fall for it.  Seldom have I read a book on the bandwagon which I have loved as much as everyone else. Anyway, this book is a murder mystery which started out ok but the more I read, the more annoying and badly written it got.   I am trying to be nice about this book but I struggling.  My book of 2021 is The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Book 75 - One of Them by Musa Okwonga

Reading date  - April 2021 I will begin this review by copying the following from the description of the book:  "Woven throughout this deeply personal and unflinching memoir of Musa’s five years at Eton in the 1990s is a present-day narrative which engages with much wider questions about pressing social and political issues: privilege, the distribution of wealth, the rise of the far right in the UK, systemic racism, the ‘boys’ club’ of government and the power of the few to control the fate of the many. What I expected from this book is not what I got from it.  For some reason, I thought this would be a biography of Musa's life, from birth to modern day.  I should have paid more attention to what the description said. This book is brilliant, Musa has a skill where he writes about the everyday and mundane (to him) in a way which makes reading about it an absolute joy...
